The Colombian banana sector has made it a priority to ensure a fair price for its national product, particularly in the context of its exports to the European Union, which currently serves as its primary market destination. The sector is focusing on increasing its participation in this market.
In 2024, Colombia's banana sector demonstrated strategic growth, particularly in terms of productivity, achieving 2,050 boxes per hectare. Emerson Aguirre, the president of the Association of Colombian Banana Growers (Augura), highlighted that the previous year concluded with positive figures in comparison to the statistics recorded in 2023.
In a firm demonstration of social responsibility and commitment to human rights, banana producers and companies from Colombia, Ecuador, Dominican Republic, Costa Rica, Peru, Guatemala, and Panama have signed a commitment to the "Silence does not protect" campaign, an initiative led by the Latin American and Caribbean Coordinator of Small Producers and Fair Trade Workers (CLAC). The campaign's objective is threefold: to raise awareness, prevent, and address gender-based violence and sexual harassment in production environments.
Colombia has achieved a significant milestone in its banana exports, setting a new record in 2024. Notably, this marks the first occasion that the nation has surpassed the one billion-dollar export threshold, achieving a total of 1,026 million dollars in exports. This achievement underscores the country's economic growth and commitment to social and labor sustainability. The international community has taken notice of Colombia's unique model, which has garnered the attention of global buyers.
In today's global market, it is essential to recognize the true value of Colombian bananas," says Emerson Aguirre, president of Augura, which leads more than 70% of the national production sector.
